Osteometer A/S was founded in 1989 by Dr. Claus Christiansen and Dr. Bente Juel Riis on the basis of 25 years of research within osteoporosis. For more than two decades Dr. Claus Christiansen has been involved in internationally recognized research on the problems of the postmenopausal woman. He has specialized in the disease of brittle bones (osteoporosis) and bone diseases in general. The main goal of the company was to develop, manufacture and market diagnostic tools with a target audience of the postmenopausal woman, especially emphasizing the diagnostic procedures of bone metabolic diseases.

The first densitometer developed by Osteometer was an isotope based system, DT-100. This was followed by the introduction of an X-ray based system, the DTX-100, which used a single energy X-ray source.

In 1992, Osteometer A/S expanded its activities by introducing biochemical kits for the determination of bone turnover. This unique feature is incorporated in the software for the DTX-200 DexaCare® and DexaCare® G4 bone densitometers, providing assessment of the annual bone loss and thereby future risk prediction for developing osteoporosis (software feature currently not available in the USA).

Three years later, Osteometer separated into two companies, Osteometer MediTech A/S, specializing in office based scanners and densitometers for diagnosis of osteoporosis, and Osteometer BioTech A/S, specializing in biochemical markers of bone and cartilage metabolism.

In 1998 Osteometer MediTech A/S was acquired by US based company OSI Systems, Inc. and in the fall of 1999 it was decided to relocate the company to California to exploit synergies between Osteometer MediTech and OSI Systems, Inc. The move became a reality in January 2000 and at the same time the company name changed from Osteometer MediTech A/S to Osteometer MediTech, Inc.

For the past few years Osteometer MediTech’s main product has been the DTX-200 DexaCare®, a forearm scanner based on dual energy X-ray absorptiometry technology (DEXA) with an unsurpassed accuracy and precision. DTX-200 DexaCare® is highly recognized throughout the world and several thousand devices have been sold in more than 50 countries. This is especially due to the fact that physicians all over the world regard the DTX-200 DexaCare® as a fast, reliable and cost-effective scanner.
